Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
