This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
